The tree is up and decorated; Beloved Other has sorted out the decorations and hung them in appropriate places. It all looks very lovely.
Quite what it has to do with Advent, and more particularly Christmas, is of course, open to question.
I know the history, I understand the symbolism of bringing greenery indoors in the winter (and the practicality, in the centre of The City of making that plastic greenery) but I am wondering if there is an Advent meaning here; that which normally, in all our everyday understanding belongs in one place actually being in another – trees belong outside, and we take that for granted. God belongs in another world, and we take that as normal.
And at this time of year, we bring the tree inside.
And it is all part of preparing to hear again of the God who won’t stay where God is supposed to be…..
